Green machines: How do you keep your fleet sustainable?

Every fleet manager must consider ways to make their fleet greener. While the environmental impact of green technologies continue to create huge debates around the world, the simple truth of the matter is that by improving your eco-credentials, you could stand to save a lot of money – so long as you do it right, and you take a few factors into account.

Lower mileage

This point is pretty obvious, but by keeping a close eye on business mileage, you’ll have a much better impact on the environment. More efficient route planning – stringing together deliveries or jobs close by, or using a good-quality satnav to find the best route for low fuel consumption (e.g. motorways and A roads), is a good start. Consider an investment in fleet management technology to keep track of how efficiently your vehicles are being driven, too.

Better fuel economy

The next step is to look at your fleet and analyse your MPG ratio for each vehicle. Have you got two vans for the same purpose, but one is markedly better than the other for efficiency? Do you still run older vans that are past their prime, and need a more up-to-date replacement?

Don’t forget that many efficiency issues can be improved by consistent, thorough maintenance and forethought between drivers, such as only carrying required cargo instead of driving with heavier loads that can negatively affect performance.

If budget constraints are holding you back from simply replacing a vehicle, consider a conversion – which takes us onto our next point…

Alternative fuels

Converting vehicles to biodiesel or autogas may sound like a complex task, but the reality is different – more and more companies now specialise in this. And with ever more petrol stations providing alternatives to unleaded and diesel, you could find that a different fuel type may be exactly what you need, even if it’s just as a back-up to the existing engine.

Go electric

If you want, go one step further into the world of clean transport by buying a hybrid, or fully-electric, van. The government is more than willing to reward you for your commitment.

Money saved, money made

Remember that one of the most powerful positive messages you can send to your customers is that you’re investing in the environment. Earlier this year, an international study from Unilever revealed that a third of consumers are choosing to buy goods and services from brands that are socially and ecologically responsible. By committing to spending up front to save money in the long run, you could end up securing more contracts or sales by proudly demonstrating your commitment to the environment!
