The latest DAF LF: What’s new for 2017?

The DAF LF – the Dutch manufacturer’s baby of the bunch – has become a real favourite on British roads. Whether it’s running routes for the Royal Mail or TNT, or shuttling the fire service between important jobs, it’s made a name for itself as a reliable workhorse. Now, DAF has released its all-new LF, which builds on its strengths to deliver a fine-tuned and nicely improved truck that could well find a place in any fleet.

Here, we’ll break down the newest changes – perhaps it’s time you checked the DAF LF out in person?

All-new engines

For those looking for a better fuel efficiency in the DAF 7.5-tonne LF City model, the company has introduced the new 3.8-litre PACCAR PX-4 engine. This delivers either 156hp (500NM torque) or 172hp (600Nm).

Meanwhile, drivers with a larger load will benefit from the new 4.5-litre PACCAR PX-5 (184hp and 213hp) and 6.7-litre PACCAR PX-7 (234hp and 325hp). All of these new engines are quieter, too, meaning there’s more comfort behind the wheel.

Automatic transmission now available for 18 and 19-tonne LFs

DAF has extended its range of manual and automatic five-, six-, nine- and 12-speed transmissions for the improved 2017 LF series, including the inclusion of an Allison automatic transmission for the most powerful versions of the PX-7 – making those huge, long drives even easier for those behind the wheel.

Reduced rear axles for better fuel savings

As a way to save you more at the petrol pump and give you even better return on investment, the new LF has a faster rear axle ratio of up to 3.31:1. It means that engine speeds drop by between 150rpm and 200rpm when cruising, and when combined with the newest PACCAR engines, you could see fuel savings of up to 6%.

ACC, AEBS, FCW and LDWS as standard

The new DAF LF – at eight tonnes gross vehicle weight and fitted with air suspension on the rear axle – benefits from standard fittings including Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Advanced Emergency Braking System (AEBS), Forward Collision Warning (FCW) and Lane Departure Warning System (LDWS).

Easier than ever to build your own

In its commitment to making the LF as customisable as possible, DAF has extended its Body Attachment Modules, which allow you to attach bodywork or equipment with even more ease. These include specific modules designed for box bodies with tail-lifts, a tipper, and a tanker with a sub-frame.

Optional pedestrian and cyclist safety window

Responding to the popularity of a feature that’s become popular among specialist van door fitters, the new LF has developed an optional passenger door lower window, meaning drivers can get a better viewpoint on cyclists and pedestrians who may be alongside the cab.

Improved design, inside and out

The new LF interior features a brighter, fresher finish, while the driver information panel has been redesigned to make all important information clearer. Outside, it showcases new chrome strips on the grille alongside a new logo panel.
