Exploring the ISUZU D-MAX Range

The D-MAX, which has been on our forecourts for the last 15 years has played a significant role in spearheading the demand of pickups within the UK – it’s proved popular with people looking for a hard-working, rugged truck, making it a regular sight on building sites and in farmer’s fields.

The key to its success comes in its customisability; with a trio of body styles and with five different trims available, it’s capable of being nicely tailored to the job you need it to do. However, competitors have cottoned on to the changing tastes in trucks like these. In the last few years, the market has gotten more crowded with the likes of the Ford Ranger and Nissan Navara.

In order to keep competitive, ISUZU has brought its fleet up to date with its latest generation of the D-MAX this year. But what can you expect from its latest offering? We break down the 2017 model to see if it’s the perfect choice for you.

Engine

Regardless of the model you go with, you’ll get ISUZU’s 1.9-litre turbo diesel engine. It’s a reduction on the 2.5-litre block, but without losing any of that all-important power; you still get 163bhp and 360Nm of torque.

 

Transmission

The most fuel-efficient gearbox is the manual in the RWD model, which delivers a solid 45.6mpg. However, if you need a 4x4 model – which, admittedly, lots of people do - this falls to 40.4mpg, and 36.2mpg if you’re going automatic. All gearboxes are six-speed.

 

Practicality

Thanks to the D-MAX’s lighter engine, its payload capacity has jumped across its range.  The generous single cab boasts a space of 2,305mm x 1,570mm, with a payload of 1,282kg; this falls only a little on the 4x4 model, where it’s 1,196kg. Meanwhile, the extended cab gives you 1,141kg, with dimensions of 1,795mm x 1,530mm.

 

Safety

On every model, you can expect electronic stability control, traction control and ABS brakes – nothing different from its competitors, admittedly – but ISUZU has redeveloped the D-MAX’s bonnet and front bumper to boost protection in crashes.

 

Warranty

Here’s where the D-MAX really ups its game past its biggest rivals. You’ll get a five-year (or 125,000-mile) warranty on every vehicle, and only needs servicing every 12,000 miles, or two years.

 

Extras

While it’s worth exploring the trims individually and in more detail, the D-MAX’s base model grants you air-conditioning, electric windows, Bluetooth connectivity, as well as LED daytime running lights.
